August 15: Light on Their Feet

It’s still summer in New England, which means plenty of fresh seafood, lighter dinners and evenings when a big, heavy wine just doesn’t sound very appealing. This Saturday’s four wines are made for exactly that kind of drinking.

We’ll start with two fresh, mineral-driven whites that are naturals with seafood and shellfish: an unusual Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc blend from cool, coastal Santa Barbara and an old-vine field blend of native grapes from Portugal’s Dão.

Then we head to the mountains of northern Italy for two reds that are all about freshness rather than weight. Foradori Lezèr and Muri-Gries Santa Maddalena show how grapes such as Teroldego, Schiava and Lagrein can make bright, lively reds that are especially delicious with a slight chill.

Four very different wines, all fresh, food-friendly and light on their feet.

2025 Lieu Dit Blanc de Mer: $27

Light on Their Feet tasting lineup - Foradori, Muri-Gries, Lieu Dit, J. Cabral
Light on Their Feet tasting lineup - Foradori, Muri-Gries, Lieu Dit, J. Cabral

A fresh, coastal white from Santa Barbara County blending Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in neutral oak and stainless steel, it shows citrus blossom, pear, yellow apple and a clean saline finish. Bright, textural and especially good with seafood, sushi or goat cheese.

An old-vine field blend from Portugal’s Dão, combining Malvasia Fina, Encruzado, Bical and other native varieties. Fermented mostly in stainless steel with a small portion in French oak, it is elegant and mineral-driven, with citrus, white flowers, subtle toast and bright acidity. Pair with grilled fish, shellfish or roast chicken.

2023 J. Cabral Almeida Musgo Reserva Branco: $25

2025 Foradori Lezèr: $33

This single-vineyard Cabernet Franc comes from the eastern side of Seneca Lake, where silt-loam soils lie over shale. Fresh and graceful rather than heavy, it offers bright red fruit, floral and savory notes, gentle earthiness and lively acidity. Pair with roast chicken, pork tenderloin, grilled sausages or mushrooms.

2024 Muri-Gries St. Magdalener Klassisch: $20

A traditional Alto Adige red made from 95% Schiava and 5% Lagrein. Light-bodied but full of character, it offers bright cherry and raspberry, soft tannins and subtle earthy, savory notes. Best served slightly chilled with roast chicken, pizza, mushroom pasta or charcuterie.

August 8: American Wine, Coast to Coast

After exploring the wines of Italy, Spain and France, this week we bring the tasting home, with wines from three of America’s most distinctive wine regions: the Finger Lakes, Santa Barbara County and Sonoma County.

Climate change is reshaping winegrowing on both coasts. Warmer seasons can help red grapes ripen more successfully in the Finger Lakes, even as earlier budbreak, frost and disease create new risks. In California, growers are confronting a different set of challenges, including increasing heat, drought, wildfire and smoke. These four wines show how thoughtful producers are expressing their regions while adapting to changing conditions.

2023 Forge Cellers Dry Riesling Classique: $21

American wine tasting lineup at Winestone - Forge Cellars, Diatom, Fitch Mountain
American wine tasting lineup at Winestone - Forge Cellars, Diatom, Fitch Mountain

Bone-dry Finger Lakes Riesling from ten vineyard sites along southeastern Seneca Lake. Fermented separately in neutral barrels and then blended, it is bright and precise, with citrus, orchard fruit and stony minerality. Pair with oysters, sushi, ceviche or Thai and Vietnamese dishes with a little heat.

Chardonnay in its cleanest, most transparent form. Fermented in stainless steel with no oak and malolactic fermentation inhibited, Diatom is fresh and mineral-driven, with lemon, white peach, citrus blossom and a saline finish. Pair with grilled shrimp, scallops, crab cakes, grilled fish or roast chicken.

2024 Diatom Chardonnay: $25

2024 Forge Cellars Willow Vineyard Cabernet Franc: $25

This single-vineyard Cabernet Franc comes from the eastern side of Seneca Lake, where silt-loam soils lie over shale. Fresh and graceful rather than heavy, it offers bright red fruit, floral and savory notes, gentle earthiness and lively acidity. Pair with roast chicken, pork tenderloin, grilled sausages or mushrooms.

2022 Fitch Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon: $30

A polished Cabernet made from fruit grown in Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Aged for 16 months in French oak, it shows blackberry, cassis and red cherry, with dark chocolate, gentle spice, smooth tannins and a long finish. Pair with steak, burgers, short ribs or aged cheddar.

August 1: A Mid-Summer Tour of France

France is very much on our minds this week. As extreme heat and wildfires threaten communities across the southwest, including areas near Bordeaux, our thoughts are with the people, vineyards and landscapes affected.

As August begins, our tasting takes us through four very different corners of France. We start high in the Alps with a crisp, mineral Jacquère from Savoie, travel west to Touraine for a lively, peppery rosé, continue to Burgundy for an elegant Pinot Noir, and finish in Margaux with a beautifully mature 2016 Bordeaux.

It is a wonderful French lineup for midsummer, bright and refreshing at the start, then increasingly layered, savory and complex.

2023 André & Michel Quenard Chignin: $23

French wine tasting at Winestone - Savoie, Touraine, Burgundy, Margaux
French wine tasting at Winestone - Savoie, Touraine, Burgundy, Margaux

Imported by Kermit Lynch, this crisp Alpine white made of 100% Jacquère, offers ripe peach, nectarine and citrus layered over mouthwatering limestone minerality.

A vibrant organic blend of 60% Pineau d’Aunis and 40% Cabernet Franc, with wild strawberry, raspberry, rose petal and subtle peppery spice. Fresh, lively and full of personality.

2025 Clos Roussely “Temps Danse” Rosé: $20

2023 Domaine A.F. Gros Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge: $50

Made from 100% Pinot Noir grown above Vosne-Romanée, this elegant Burgundy shows bright cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry with subtle earth and spice. Lively acidity and fine tannins lead to a refined finish.

2016 Confidences de Prieuré-Lichine: $45

A decade-old Margaux made from 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, layering black cherry, plum and cassis with cedar, tobacco and earth. Polished, savory and beautifully mature.

July 25: Road Trip Through Northern Spain

For wine lovers, there is something especially meaningful about tasting a wine where it is made. Seeing the vineyards, walking through the cellars and meeting the people behind the bottles deepens your understanding of both the wine and the place it comes from. On our recent trip to Spain, we had the opportunity to do all three.

This Saturday, we are bringing home some of our favorite discoveries from the journey, or at least the ones that export to the US. We will travel from the coastal vineyards of Getaria to the historic cellars of Rioja, with a stop in Galicia for one of my favorite white wines of Spain. Along the way, we will share stories from the wineries, the winemakers we met and the remarkable places we visited.

Join us for five wines that capture the freshness, history and diversity of Northern Spain, including lightly spritzy Txakolina, elegant rosado, mineral Godello and two beautifully aged Riojas.

2025 Ameztoi Getariako Txakolina Blanco: $27

Northern Spain wine tasting at Winestone - Txakolina, Rioja, Godello
Northern Spain wine tasting at Winestone - Txakolina, Rioja, Godello

Light, crisp and gently spritzy, this traditional Basque white offers bright citrus, mouthwatering acidity and distinctive salty, briny notes. Made from 100% Hondarrabi Zuri grown above the Bay of Biscay, it is a joyful match for seafood, olives and pintxos.

Made from old-vine Tempranillo grown in Rioja Alavesa, this classic Reserva combines blackberry, cherry and licorice with subtle spice and polished tannins. About two years in primarily American oak add complexity without overshadowing the ripe fruit. Excellent with burgers, steak, grilled vegetables and aged cheeses.

This pale, elegant Rioja rosado offers notes of peach skin, stone fruit, citrus and flowers. Sixteen weeks on the fine lees add subtle texture, while bright acidity keeps it crisp and refreshing. Delicious with shellfish, salads, light pasta and paella.

2025 Muga Rosado: $20

2024 Rafael Palacios Louro do Bolo: $32

One of our favorite Spanish whites, this high-elevation Godello combines notes of lemon, peach and quince with bright acidity and a lightly creamy texture. Fermentation in large French oak foudres and four months on the lees add depth without overwhelming its fresh, subtly salty character.

2017 Viña Cubillo Crianza: $40

2021 Marques De Riscal Rioja Reserva: $25

López de Heredia ages this classic Rioja for more than three years in well-used American oak, followed by extensive bottle aging. Yet the fruit still shines, with fresh red fruit, licorice, delicate floral notes and fine tannins. A beautifully mature and versatile red for tapas, charcuterie or roast meats.

July 18: The Grapes of Piedmont

This week we’re heading to Piemonte, one of northern Italy’s most celebrated wine regions and home to some of the country’s most distinctive grapes. Set against the foothills of the Alps, Piemonte is best known for Barolo and Barbaresco, but its story reaches well beyond Nebbiolo.

On Saturday, Jo-Ann, our Italian wine scholar, will guide us through a beautiful range of Piemonte wines. We won’t taste every grape the region has to offer, but we’ll explore many of its classics, from crisp Cortese in Gavi to delicate rosato, elegant Pinot Nero, expressive Nebbiolo and the wonderfully aromatic local grape Ruchè.

It’s a tasting that shows the range of Piemonte: fresh whites, graceful reds, historic estates, local traditions and wines deeply tied to place. Come taste why this region remains one of Italy’s great wine treasures.

2024 Grifo del Quartaro Gavi: $20

Piedmont wine tasting at Winestone - Gavi, Ruchè, Nebbiolo, Pinot Nero
Piedmont wine tasting at Winestone - Gavi, Ruchè, Nebbiolo, Pinot Nero

A classic white from Piemonte, made from 100% Cortese grown in the village of Gavi itself. Fresh and dry, with pear and apple fruit, a subtle almond note and a smooth, clean finish. Stainless steel fermentation and no oak keep the focus on freshness, purity and balance. A beautiful aperitif and a natural match for seafood, sushi, grilled shrimp or fresh cheeses.

A rare local red from Monferrato, Ruchè is known for its floral aromatics, spice and silky texture. Crivelli’s version is aromatic and elegant, with red cherry, rose petal, white pepper and warm spice. Soft tannins and a smooth, savory finish make it a distinctive but very food-friendly red.

A pale, delicate rosato from one of Barolo’s most beloved family estates, made from 85% Nebbiolo, 10% Barbera and 5% Dolcetto. Early-picked fruit, gentle pressing and no malolactic fermentation keep the style light, fragrant and fresh. Look for citrus, strawberry, raspberry, peach and a hint of white pepper.

2025 Vajra Rosa Bella: $20

2020 Castello di Nieve Pinot Nero: $32

A graceful Piemonte Pinot Nero with a fascinating local history in Neive. This is not about copying Burgundy, but about reviving a family tradition around a grape that found a small foothold in Piemonte centuries ago. Light-bodied and elegant, with cherry, cranberry, subtle earth, smoke and delicate tannins.

2024 Starda Langhe Nebbiolo: $23

2024 Crivelli Rouche Di Castagnole Monferrato: $32

A gentler expression of Nebbiolo from sandier, lower-elevation sites around Serraboella and Cà Veja. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in large Slavonian oak, it shows red cherry, dried rose, subtle spice and earthy notes, with classic Nebbiolo freshness and firm but approachable tannins.

July 11: A Taste of the Loire Valley

This week’s tasting is a tribute to the Loire Valley, one of France’s most diverse and quietly thrilling wine regions. It may not be the first place people name when they think of French wine. Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne usually get there first. But for anyone who loves variety, freshness and food-friendly wines, the Loire is essential.

Stretching from central France toward the Atlantic, the Loire offers castles, riverside villages and an incredible range of grapes and styles. This week we’ll taste four classic Loire expressions: Sauvignon Blanc from Coteaux du Giennois, Chenin Blanc from Vouvray, a textured Touraine rosé, and a biodynamic Cheverny red made from Pinot Noir and Gamay. Save the airfare and come explore the Loire with us, one glass at a time.

2023 Berthier Coteaux du Giennois: $25

Loire Valley wine tasting at Winestone - Vouvray, Sancerre, Rosé, Cheverny
Loire Valley wine tasting at Winestone - Vouvray, Sancerre, Rosé, Cheverny

A softer Loire Sauvignon Blanc from just north of Sancerre, grown on flint, limestone and clay soils. Organically farmed and aged on fine lees, this is citrusy and gently mineral, but rounder and less razor-sharp than classic Sancerre.

A certified organic and biodynamic Loire red from a family domaine dating to 1846. This Pinot Noir and Gamay blend is fresh, lifted and easy to drink, with cherry, redcurrant, raspberry and a savory mineral edge. Serve slightly chilled.

A classic dry Vouvray from one of the Loire’s historic names. Made from Chenin Blanc and aged nine months on lees, it shows pear, peach, pineapple and citrus, with a rounded, textured palate and a clean lemony finish.

2025 Marc Brédif Vouvray Classic: $25

2025 Luc Poullain Touraine Rosé: $20

A textured Loire rosé made from equal parts Grolleau, Pineau d’Aunis, Gamay, Côt and Cabernet Franc. Picked in stages for balance and freshness, it offers crushed strawberry, raspberry, citrus and gentle grip. More character than a simple summer rosé.

2022 Gendrier Domaine des Huards Envol: $29

Why Try Blind Tasting?

Blind tasting is one of the best ways to discover what you truly love, without being influenced by a label, reputation, region, or price. You pay closer attention to what’s in the glass: the aromas, the texture, the fruit, the structure, and that first honest impression.

It can also be a lot of fun.

One of the most famous blind tastings of all time was the 1976 Judgment of Paris, when French judges shocked the wine world by ranking California Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon ahead of top wines from Burgundy and Bordeaux. The result changed how people thought about California wine and proved that great bottles can come from unexpected places.

This Saturday, we’ll keep things a little less dramatic, but just as entertaining.

Join us for an afternoon of discovery, laughter, and a little mystery. You might just surprise yourself.

May 30: Label Art: What's on the Bottle Matters

You can’t always judge a wine by its label, but sometimes the outside of the bottle gives you a pretty good clue about what’s inside. This week’s tasting is all about label art, not just as decoration, but as part of the wine’s story.

These four bottles show how much a label can say. Big Salt gives you the coastal, breezy feel of the wine before the first sip. Love You Bunches turns carbonic maceration into a playful pun. Threadcount uses its quilted design to suggest texture and ease. And Canard’s Resurgence tells a much deeper story of loss, recovery, and giving back after the Glass Fire.

The wines are just as varied as the labels: a fresh, aromatic white, a crisp rosé, a juicy carbonic red, and a full-bodied Cabernet with a powerful backstory. Come taste how the outside of the bottle can help tell the story of what’s inside.

2025 Big Salt White: $20

Label art wine tasting at Winestone - Big Salt, Canard, Threadcount, Stolpman
Label art wine tasting at Winestone - Big Salt, Canard, Threadcount, Stolpman

A full-bodied Paso Robles Cabernet with a powerful label story, created after the Glass Fire destroyed Canard’s Napa estate crop. Dark and structured, with black cherry, plum, cassis, cocoa, earth, and savory spice. Pair it with steak, lamb, short ribs, burgers, or roasted mushrooms.

A crisp California rosé of Pinot Noir with a quilted label that hints at its coastal patchwork of vineyards. Bright and refreshing, with strawberry, raspberry, red cherry, and a little citrus lift. Pair it with shrimp cocktail, grilled salmon, chicken salad, soft cheeses, or fresh tomatoes.
